Tips for Having an Organized Garage

Your garage is an extension of your home. While you may have the best intentions of having a clean and organized garage before you know it becomes a catch-all for anything and everything. You know, like that one drawer in the kitchen. Don’t discredit yourself, maintaining an organized garage is overwhelming. Garages are home to so many things like camping gear, bikes, yard equipment, outdoor toys, tools, cars. The list goes on.

It’s time to reclaim your space. Cooler temperatures are right around the corner. Now is the perfect time to give your garage a much-needed organization makeover. Your future self will thank you once you walk into a clean and organized space.

Take Inventory

Note the things that are currently stored in your garage. It’s also important to note all the things that still need a place in your garage. This will help you map out your space and layout the items appropriately.

Get Creative

Instead of leaning your items against the wall or even placing them on the floor, think about getting a pegboard to hang your lawn items. Pegboards are prime real estate for any rakes, hoses, shovels, brooms, drills, and weed trimmers. The possibilities are endless. Plus it will give you that extra reminder when you’re thinking about those tasks. PVC overhead storage is another way to get creative. The smooth surface makes it a breeze to load and unload bulky items.

Declutter

If it doesn’t bring you joy, get rid of it. Okay, a little extra in this context. One thing you can do is separate out your items to see what you have duplicates of or look for items you haven’t touched in years. From there, decide whether or not you really need it and make a donation pile. This will save you space in the long-term.

Organize, Organize, Organize

Storage bins are a functional and satisfying way to store items that are typically used together. For example, you can make bins for items related together like camping, fall, car care, travel, beach, Christmas decorations, and skiing. You can take this a step further by installing shelving in your garage where you can neatly store your labeled storage bins. Not to mention, you’ll save time not having to dig around for your ski gear when you need it.

Take Advantage of Your Space

Having an organized garage will leave you with a new perspective on your garage and may even give you some extra square footage to work with. You will appreciate having your cars in the garage once cooler weather rolls in. Think about how bicycles and outdoor toys can be stored more efficiently so your vehicle can safely park. Tackling your entire garage at once can be daunting. Schedule out some time to dedicate to this project. Making small improvements now will make a big difference later on!
